what’s mass?
made up of bone, muscle, fat tissue and fluid. It’s a scalar quantity as it has no direction
what’s weight?
the force on a given mass due to gravity.
What is gravity?
a constant value and means that an objects mass can be measured by its weight
what’s speed?
the rate of change of position with reference to direction. it’s a vector quantitiy
what’s acceleration?
occurs when velocity increases and deceleration occurs when velocity decreases. They’re vector quantities
what’s momentum?
the product of the mass and velocity of an object. It’s a vector quantity as it has a magnitude and a direction
whats the centre of mass?
the point at which the body is balanced in all directions.
what can happen to the centre of mass’ position?
it’s location around the naval when standing in the anatomical position but will change with movement
can the centre of mass move outside the body?
yes and it can act as a point of rotation
what’s stability?
the ability to resist motion applied t it. Also the ability to withstand force and return back to its original position
how can the mass of the body affect stabilit?
the greater the mass the greater the inertia required to displace it?
what’s a sporting example of mass of the body affecting stability?
sumo wrestlers are hard to knock of balance
how can height of the centre of mass affect stability?
the lower the centre of mass the greater the stability
what’s a sporting example of how the height of the centre of mass can affect stability?
smaller footballers will be more stable than taller footballers
how can the base of support affect stability?
the greater the size of base the greater the stability

a player who stands with their feet wider will be more stable
how does line of gravity affect stability?
imagine a line which extends from the centre of mass downwards to the ground. The more central the line the higher stability
what’s a sporting example of how line of gravity affects stability?
a netball shooter will have her line of gravity over her base unike the GK
