selective attention
failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere
inattentional blindness
failing to notice changes in the environment

relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed awake state
alpha waves
large slow brain waves associated with deep sleep
delta waves
a pair of cell clusters in the hypothalamus that controls circadian rhythm; adjusts melatonin production
suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
a recurring sleep stage during which vivd dreams commonly occur; also known as ‘paradoxical sleep’ because the muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active
R.E.M. sleep
recurring problems in falling or staying asleep
insomnia
a sleep disorder in which a person has uncontrollable sleep attacks; something’s lapsing directly into R.E.M. sleep
narcolepsy
sleep disorder in which a sleeping person repeatedly stops breathing until blood oxygen is so low the person awakes just long enough to draw a breath
sleep apnea
