Ch 2: Printers Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is the most common type of device used to produce hard - copy output?
printer
How do most printers sold today connect to a computer?
How do older printers connect to a computer?
Most printers sold today connect to the computer using a USB port, but some older printers may use a legacy parallel port.
Some printers can also connect to computers via wireless networking such as Bluetooth or WI Fi.
How many ink cartridges do most inkjet printers use?
4
What are the colors of the 4 cartridges used by an inkjet printer?
black, sienna, magenta, and yellow
Why are ink cartridges expensive?
Usually cartridges contain print heads
What is print speed?
the speed at which a printer can print
How is print speed measured?
pages per minute
What is printer resolution?
the number of dots per inch emitted by the printer
What is an inkjet printer’s typical resolution?
between 600 and 2400 dots per inch (DPI)
How does a piezoelectric inkjet printer work?
Each nozzle contains piezoelectric crystals which change their shape when electricity is applied to them and then force out the ink.
Why is the electrical process easier on the printer compared to the thermal process?
The electrical process does not require heating the ink.
Why does the electrical process produce better output?
The ink is less prone to smearing
What kind of data does a laser printer receive from a computer to print?
A laser printer receives digitized data from a computer to print.
How much do laser printers cost compared to inkjet printers?
Laser printers cost more than inkjets to buy
How much does it cost to print on a laser printer per page compared to an inkjet printer?
Printing on a laser printer costs less per page to printed compared to an inkjet printer
What are the three parts of a laser printer?
- drum
- toner
- fuser
How does a laser printer work?
- The printer reads characteristics to be printed and relays them to the laser
- The laser sends a light beam through a series of mirrors to the drum, creating tiny dots of light
- The dots of light neutralize the negative charge on the drum
- As the drum rotates past the toner, the toner is attracted to the neutralized areas and clings to them.
- As the drum rotates past the positively charged paper, the toner jumps off onto the paper.
- A fuser heats the paper to melt toner onto it permanently.
What can some inkjet printers print photo quality images on?
special photo paper, referred to as photorealism
What do some inkjet printers require to print the best quality photos?
special photo ink cartridges, referred to as photorealism
Which type of connection does a typical inkjet printer use?
a USB connection
Which types of connections do only some inkjet printers use?
ethernet
a wired network
WI fi
wireless network connectivity.
What do some printers accept that allows them to print images from additional cameras or other sources without using a computer?
flash memory cards
