Ch 7 Infection Control Flashcards
(13 cards)
Critical Items
Come into contact with soft tissue and bone. Has the highest risk of disease transmission
Semi Critical Items
Comes into contact with non intact skin: mouth mirror, impression trays
Non critical Items
Can come into contact with skin: bp cuffs, tubehead
Recirculation of instruments
Clinical use, instrument cleaner, rinse and dried, instrument packaging, seal, sterilize, storage
Does the chemical indicator on packaging indicate that the instruments are sterile?
No, the chemical indicator indicates that the autoclave reached the optimal temperature of penetration
Approved methods of sterilization
Steam under pressure, dry heat, chemical vapor, immediate use steam, chemical cold sterile
Most economical method of sterilization
Steam under pressure
Dry heat sterilization
Not economical, temperature has to be maintained for 3 hours. Any instrument can undergo this sterilization
Chemical vapor sterilization
Prevents corrosion and rust and has short cycle. Needs adequate ventilation and cannot be used in a small room
Flash sterilization
Used for unwrapped instruments and has to be immediately used
Chemical cold sterile
No biological method to test for sterilization. Not recommended.
Properties of disinfection
Broad spectrum, fast acting, unaffected by physical factors, non toxic, surface compatibility, no residual effect on treated surfaces, odorless, easy to use, economical
Benefits of barriers
Covers hard to clean surfaces, eliminate contact time with disinfectants, safe and chemical free
