What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)?
requires that all students with learning disabilities be taught in the least restrictive environment. The essence of this requirement is to ensure that students are not unnecessarily removed from the mainstream classroom or isolated away from their peers.
What are accommodations?
an alternate way of learning the curriculum, changes in the way the information is presented rather than changes in the content
What are Modifications?
Not synonymous with accommodations, modifications are a modified version of the materials, different from the rest of the class.
What is an Inclusive classroom?
an educational space where students with all types, levels, and abilities work and learn together

define SPED (Special Education)
is the education of children and young adults who have special requirements in order for them to learn content and curriculum in a public school setting. These special requirements are determined by diagnosticians, teachers, and other specialists in the field of special education.
What are some ways to modify a lesson plan for SPED
Less workload, change the content, supports in the learning process such as oral delivery, calculators etc.
When should modifications be used?
only id the student cannot reach the learning goals with their accommodations alone
What are Related Services Personnel?
professionals who help students with disabilities by providing additional support services based on the students’ needs. These services include speech and/or audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, early intervention, rehabilitation services, mobility services, school health services, medical diagnostic services, social work services, and parent resources.
What is Speech Therapy?
involves diagnosing speech issues and implementing strategies to address these issues, and it’s usually performed by a speech language pathologist (SLP).
What is Occupational Therapy?
is a service intended to foster and develop the skills required to accomplish everyday tasks. These are often fine motor skills. These skills help children learn and play
What is physical therapy?
typically addresses patients’ gross motor skills. A physical therapist may, for example, work with a student to improve his or her ability to sit correctly on the mat during circle time or use the playground equipment successfully. PT may also be utilized after an injury.
