What is the Education for All Handicapped Children Act?
The EHA sought to protect the rights of individuals, specifically children, that experience disability. Before this act they were not recieving adequet education

What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ?
Sought to create equal access to free and public education for children with disabilities, and held teachers and school accountable for teaching these children
When was IDEA passed
1990, and then revised in 2004
What age groups were eligible for IDEA?
Children ages 3-21, and children as young as three qualifying under IDEA’s Early Childhood Intervention Program
What are the Four Parts of IDEA Law?
General Provisions, SPED Services, Early Intervention Services, National Activities to Improve Education of Children with Disabilities
What is in the General Provisions of IDEA Law
Mainly Administrative, with the US DOE focuses on helping students and teaching professionals by doing research on new teaching methods to give the best education possible.
What happens in the SPED services of IDEA
Trough here students are required to receive their IEP
What are the six pillars of SPED Services in IDEA
Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), Appropriate Evaluation, IEP, Least Restricted Environment, Parent/Teacher Participation, Procedural Safeguards
What happens in Early Intervention services of IDEA?
Early Intervention Services in Part C refers to children that are infants up to age 2. This part also identifies the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), which helps families to understand what their goals for themselves and their child are.
What happens in the National Activities to Improve Education of Children with Disabilities section of IDEA?
Part D seeks to gain grants and financial aid for IDEA and for those that utilize IDEA. Through these grants, Part D seeks to gain better finances to improve resources and programming for children with disabilities.
What impact does IDEA have on SPED?

Why are IEP’s important in SPED?
Not only is it a plan for education for that child, but it also protects the child legally in terms of school discipline.

IEP’s need to be evaluated and measured frequently in order to determine a student’s level of success and to overcome any obstacles that arise

What is the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
The LRE section of IDEA states that special education students are to remain in educational environments with their non-identified peers (students not in the special education program) unless there is a compelling reason for them to be separated from those peers. The more time a student spends away from non-identified peers, the more restrictive the environment is considered to be.
What does the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 focus on?

What is required to have a 504?
As stated by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, to qualify for service under Section 504, an individual needs to possess a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
What is a 504 plan
The 504 Plan will outline the student’s areas of need and offer accommodations and modifications that will be put in place to ensure that the student has an equal and adequate opportunity to receive a public education. Like an IEP, the plan will be revisited and revised on an annual basis.
