(4 cards)
The war saw increasing demand for women to work in roles previously dominated by men in Scotland. The heavy industries of the Clyde areas saw an increase in female employment from 3758 before the war to 18500 by 1916
This is significant as it showed the large contribution the women had during the war in Scotland as they successfully overtook the ‘male’ careers and handled them successfully.
Scottish Women’s hospitals were created by Dr Elsie Inglis, a product of the Medical college for women in edinburgh.
This is significant as it shows the large impact women had in Scotland in the medical field.
By the end of the war 31500 women were working in the munitions in Scotland
This is impactful as it shows how women began working in very dangerous conditions due to harsh chemicals and heavy machinery.
The rise of female leaders increased , including Mary Barbour.
This is significant as it shows how women’s popularity and publicity increased due to the war, as well as this more people began to respect and agree with women due to the organisations created e.g the rent strikes of 1915.
