Pacifism and Consceinctious Objection Flashcards
(4 cards)
Conscientious objectors became targets for the abuse. Propaganda attempted to make them feel ashamed, one of the most used methods was strict white feathers to their clothes.
This was significant as those who rejected applying to war were made to feel guilty for not supporting their country, as a result they were made to feel humiliated.
Since the conscientious objectors refused to partake in the battle over 7000 agreed to perform duties such as stretcher-bearers
This is significant because while they refused to fight front line , they still partook in the battle somehow.
Due to the harsh conditions of which the conscientious objectors went through at least 73 died.
This is significant because it shows how tough the conditions were and how not volunteering to partake in the battle may cost you your life.
Pacifism arose when the war was declared, this resulted in Helen Crawford launching the Women’s Peace Crusade on 10th of june 1916. It supported a negotiated ‘people’s peace’ in order to end the war.
This was significant as it gained sympathy due to emotive slogans being used such as ‘I want my daddy’ to try and gain attention and support from the leaders in charge to end the war.
