Political Unionism Flashcards
(4 cards)
Political Unionists were seen as the party who could deal with ‘revolution’ as seen by events at george square in 1919 in Glasgow.
This is significant as the fear of revolution made the political unionists attractive as they stood for stability and order
The unionists worked hard to atttact the new female middle class voters after 1918.
This is significant as it showed a move towards equal rights as women in the party were very visible, for example the first ever Scottish MP ,Duchess of Atholl was a unionist.
The unionists worked hard to attract the young.
This is significant because the Junior Imperial League was targeted at 15-25 year olds and by the end of 1920s they had over 20000 members in 250 branches
The unionists attracted a large variety of voters
This is because they supported a range of progressive policies on housing, pensions, improving benefit levels and free school milk, which significantly improved life conditions for those in need.
