(4 cards)
One reason why so many Scots volunteered was due to the fear of unemployment, for example 36% of miners in Lothian coalfield enlisted
This is significant because many people were forced to volunteer due to their employers which led to a high fear for unemployment and high voluntary rates.
One reason as to why many Scots volunteered was because they were promised crofting land in the Highlands.
This is significant because it encouraged many Scots to volunteer as they believed they would receive land once the war finished, this was impacted by the agriculture careers doing successfully during the war so many people also wanted agricultural jobs.
Many scot’s volounterred to get them away from their low paid jobs.
This is significant as it shows poor work conditions led to many people volunteering to escape the workplace as they would’ve gained a bed and a steady wage and scottish pride (kilts)
The height restrictions were not imposed for the war, this allowed miners from central scotland to join
This is significant because it meant more people could volunteer as they did not care about appearance however the height restrictions were imposed in 1914
