S and sx: mild sore throat, membrane in throat, potential and kidney failure
CA: C. diphtheria
Tx: Antiserum to neutralize toxin, vaccine is key for prevention
Diphtheria
S and sx: malaise, sore throat, congestion, cough, typically no fever
Tx: No antiviral treatment, analgesia, antipyreties
Common cold
S and sx: strep throat, pneumonia, fever, sore throat w pus, recovery 1-3 weeks
CA: more than 50 types of adenoviruses
Tx: No antiviral treatment, analgesia, antipyreties
Adenoviruses
S and sx: cough(often productive) chills, shortness of breath, fever, chest pain, cyanosis
CA: various bacteria, viruses and fungi
Tx: Antimicrobial medications, vaccine available
Pneumonia
S and sx: initial URI symptoms followed by frequent violent coughing, whooping sound on inhalation
CA: B. pertussis
Tx: vaccine is crucial
Pertussis
S and sx: chronic fever, weight loss, night sweats, persistent cough with blood streaked sputum
CA: M. tuberculosis
Tx: requires multiple drug therapy for at least 2 months, BCG vaccine
Tuberculosis
S and sx: cold sx plus fever, chills
CA: Influenza viruses(A,B)
Tx: Antiviral medications, vaccine
