Epidermis
- connective tissue
- contains nerves, glands, blood, and lymphatic vessels
Dermis
S and sx: thin-walled blisters, oozing crusts, usually little fever, pain
CA: S, aureus or S. pyogenes
Tx: mild- clean with typical antibiotic. Severe- oral antibiotic
Impetigo
S and sx: flat pink rash on palms and soles, headache, muscles and joint pain, fever
CA: R. rickettsil
Pathogenesis: tick bite
Tx: No vaccine, remove tick, boxycycline
Rocky mountain fever
S and sx: begin as small red spots (macules), ends as small blisters (vesicles), lesions are pruritic (itchy), latent
CA: Varicella- zoster virus
Tx: Antivirals, vaccine
Varicella (chicken pox)
S and sx: maculopapular rash, Koplik spots, fever, rhinitis, cough
CA: virus
Tx: No antiviral med, vaccine (MMR)
Rubeola (measles)
S and sx: macular rash, cold symptoms, enlarged lymph nodes
CA: virus
Path: Viremia
Tx: Vaccine
Rubella (German measles)
produced by knife or other sharp object
Incisions
occur when tissue is torn
Lacerations
occur when epidermis is scrapped off
Abrasion
results from penetration by small sharp object
Punctures
produced by blow that crushes tissue
Contusions/hematomas
caused by heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction
Burns
localized pus, traps infection and prevents spread
Abscess
S and sx: fever, pus, toxic shock syndrome
CA: S. aureus, S. eqidermis
P: systemic(body shock)
Tx: Antibiotic resistance common
-Methicillin resistant S, aureus(MRSA)
Staphylococcal wound infections
S and sx: severe pain at wound site, rapid progression, enlarges quickly
CA: S. pyrogones
P: Toxins, shock
Tx: Immediate surgery often essential
Necrotizing Fasciitis
S and sx: green pus, chills, fever, skin lesions
CA: P. aeruginosa
Tx: resistant to many antibiotics treat wounds
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections
S and sx: difficulty swallowing, painful uncontrollable muscle spasms
CA: C. tetani
E: dirt, puncture
Tx: TIG injection, tetanus vaccine, booster
Tetanus - lockjaw
