Chap 26 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Renal artery:
Bring in blood to be filtered
Kidneys:
Structures that filter blood
Renal vein:
Takes filtered blood away from kidneys
Ureters:
Transport structures (connecting tubes) Urinary bladder and Urethra
Kidney Anatomy:
What is the Hilus?
Opening where the ureter, renal artery and vein are
What is the renal pelvis?
Mini bladder inside the kidney (accumulates urine)
What is the renal calyx?
Moves urine to the next location
What are the renal papillae?
Opening to the calyx
What are the renal pyramids?
Transport structure
. Contain arterioles and venues and collecting ducts (carry urine)
What is the renal medulla?
Central core of the kidney that contain all the transport structures
What is the renal cortex?
Functioning part of renal pyramid
What is the renal column?
It separates one pyramid from the next
Nephron Anatomy:
What is the Bowman’s Capsule?
Where urine is created
What is an afferent blood vessel?
Brings blood into the papillae (an arteriole)
What is an efferent blood vessel?
Capillary sized blood vessels moving around
- Loop of Henle
. Descending loop- urine is moving down
. Ascending loop- urine is moving up
What is the proximal tubule?
Receives urine from Bowman’s capsule
What is the distal tubule and collecting duct?
Transport
What are cortical nephrons?
The short loop of Henle
What is a juxtamedullary nephron?
Long loop of Henle
What is the glomerulus?
Collection of sinusoidal capillaries contained within the Bowman’s capsule
