Language is Arbitrary
the words are not connected to what they present until people accept that
Language is Ambiguous
the meaning is not clear-cut or fixed.
Ex: good friend is someone can hangout with but with. To another, it is someone to confide in.
Layer of language is Abstract
They are not thinsg they represent
Ex: The word c-a-t is not in fact a real cat. Or “MIC” can be a dog, cat, mammal
Language and Culture reflect each other
Culture influences our language (e.g. Adages, “words for rain”), and language can influence culture (e.g. words used to describe member of LGBTQ community)
The Meanings of Language Are Subjective
when someone says get lost, we need to think about the person who made it to decide whether its an insult or demand that you leave
Communication Rule
are shared an understanding of what communication means and what kind of communication are appropriate in particular situation
Ex: we understand that people take turn speaking might be kick out from the room.
Regulative Rule
specific when, how, where, and with whom to talk about certain things.
Ex: Westerner know not to interupt when someone else is speaking in a formal setting
Constitutive Rule
define that communication means by spectifying how to count or interpret like respect, friendliness, emotional
Communication Devices Shape Meaning
Include pauses, pacing, speed, interruption, etc.
ex: the movie about boxer pauses much time to attack the enemy
Function of Symbol
We use symbol to define experiences, people, relationship, feeling, thought
Symbol allow hypothetical thought
Ex: What would you do if you were in your friend’s situation? So that we can plan, dream, remember
