Linear Model
One way process in which one person acts on another person.
Ex: Noise, speaker
Interactive Model
Receivers respond to senders.
Ex: feedback
Transactional Model
Send and receive at the same time
Ex: Interpretting what someone says while nodding to show you are interested.
Personal Identity and Health
- We gain personal identity as we communicate with others. Ex: Your family tell you “you are smart”.
- Influence your physical and emotional well-being
Relationship
- The primary way we connect with others
- Used to solve problems and resolve conflict
- Used for self-disclosure.
Professional Value
Communication skill are closely linked to professional success. Ex: Doctors who do not listen well are less effective in treating patients.
Cultural Value
Crucial for participation is society and for interacting with those from other cultures successfully.
Breadth of the Field
- Intrapersonal communication: within oneself
- Interpersonal Communication: between 2 or more parties
- Group Communication: Small groups or teams
- Mass Communication and Digital Media: Traditional media
- Public Communication: One person speaking to larger group.
