Chapter 1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
survey
technique for discovering the self-resorted attitudes / behaviors of a particular group, using questions a representative, a random sample of the group
correlation
a measure to which two factors vary together, and how well either factor predicts the other
population
all the cases in a group being studied, where samples can be drawn
naturalistic observation
observing / recording behavior in naturally occurring situations without trying to manipulate / control the situation
replication
repeating the nature of a research study, normally with different participants in different situations, to see if basic finding extends to other participants
case study
observation / technique where one person is studied deeply, in hope of revealing universal principals
theory
explanations using a mix set of principals, organizes observations / predicts behaviors or events
hypothesis
testable prediction, often implied by a theory
statistical significance
a statistical statement of how likely it is than an obtained result occurred by chance
normal curve
symmetrical, bell-shaped curve that describes the distribution of many types of data, most of the scores falling near the mean ( 68% fall within one standard deviation of it )
standard deviation
a computer measure of how many scores vary around the mean score
range
difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution
median
middle score in the distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it
mean
arithmetic average of a distribution; adding the scores together and then dividing by the number of scores
mode
most frequently occurring score is in the distribution
