Chapter 10 Flashcards
Plants and Food (17 cards)
Polysaccharide
carbohydrate made of many units of sugar
Photosynthesis
process done by chlorophyll, light energy causes reactions where carbon dioxide + water –> glucose + oxygen.
Epidermis
outer layer of cells of non-woody parts of plants
Cuticle
thin layer of waxy material covering epidermis of plant.
Stomata (stoma)
pores in epidermis of leaf
Guard cell
pair of specialised cells surrounding the stoma, to open and close stomata
Palisade mesophyll
layer below leaf upper epidermis, main site of photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll
layer below palisade layer in leaf, contains air sacs, main site of gas exchange
Xylem
transport tissues, carries water and minerals up through plant from roots
Transpiration stream
passage of water and minerals through roots, stem and leaves
Phloem
transport tissues, carries products of photosynthesis from leaves to rest of plant
Limiting factor
component of process/reaction in short supply preventing the rate of reaction increasing
Monosaccharide
‘single’ sugar, cannot be broken down into a simpler sugar
Fructose
monosaccharide sugar found in fruit
Disaccharide
sugar made up of two monosaccharides
Cellulose
polysaccharide of glucose, forms plant cell walls
Hydroponics
crops grown with roots in a solution of mineral ions instead of soil
