Chapter 7 Flashcards
Chemical coordination (14 cards)
Exocrine gland
gland secreting a product through a duct
Endocrine gland
gland secreting hormone into blood stream
Hormone
in animals: chemical messenger, travels in blood, produced by endocrine glands. In plants: chemical messenger affecting growth
Insulin
produced by pancreas, results in decrease glucose concentration in blood
Pituitary gland
gland at base of brain, secretes hormones and hormone controlling substances
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
hormone released by pituitary gland controls water content by increasing reabsorption
Hypothalamus
region at base of brain, secretes hormones and monitors ‘drives’ (hunger, thirst)
Pancreas
gland discharging in duodenum, makes digestive enzymes and secretes hormones (e.g. insulin, glucagon)
Testes
male reproductive organ in animals, produces male gametes
Ovaries
female reproductive organ, produces ova (in animals), female reproductive structure in carpel of flower, contains ovules (in plants)
Adrenal glands
pair of endocrine glands found above kidneys, secrete adrenaline
Glycogen
polysaccharide of glucose, storage carbohydrate (animals, fungi) found in liver and muscles
Glucagon
released by pancreas, causes increase in glucose concentration in blood
Diabetes
disease where blood glucose concentration can’t be controlled properly, caused by lack of insulin
