Strucutre:

A

-Signs of growth through Janes sense of reality:
“I should have been superstitiously afraid” is Jane’s response to the supernatural/ghosts rather than previously being “unconscious” seen in chapter two when faced with her imagination/the ghost.
- Contrasts between social class and equality in Thornfield: Jane seems to have a lot more status and acceptance at Thornfield as seen due to the consistent dialogue/conversations with Mrs Fairfax, as well as perhaps reassurance from her as she is seen to be “smiling” as Jane.
However, Mrs Fairfax has a sense of superiority as she is an upper-servant.
She portrays authority and control over the other servants while differencing herself from them.
“Too much noise, Grace”.
Looks out on nature before leaving Low-wood and feels/longs freedom, longs for liberty.

Genre:

A

-Gothic genre, tragic, mirthless laugh, due to the mentioning of “superstition” and “ghosts” colonial british mindset = british superiority over immoral.
-Does Jane like Adele? Is Adele portrayed as a madwoman as she needs “taming”?,
-Bildungsroman as we see common themes (supernatural) seen in chapter two while Jane is a child.
-Fairytale?
Descriptions of the building, good treatment/ care, seems surreal.
Intertextuality - Bluebeard’s castle.

Context:

A
  • The British tried to maintain hierarchies not only in social class but also between themselves and foreigners:
For example Adele is French = Exotic
and meanwhile jane has a simple “quaker-like” appearance, Adele’s style is more extravagant and she may need “taming” in order to meet the proper British moral standards back in that era of time.
Gender need for freedom when she looks out on the “horizon”.
Class role of governess was defined but was still between working and class women.
