provides inner insights to her character. - Its all internal because its too tender and uncertain, secret to express in dialogue.

- Self-effacing, making jane not realise shes in love with him

“I more than once, when sent for to read to him, found him sitting in his library alone” - links to previous chapters when Jane would sit alone reading books.
- Dramatic irony because the reader is getting the impression that they are becoming more than friends.

Thus shows she’s more mature as she’s thinking about romantic relationships. - Subconsciously.

- Victorian women would usually not have thought in this way and would have been proper and prim.
- These are quite forward thoughts of a young woman of ambiguous class.
- They have very open and honest conversations which was not normal for an employee and employer relationship.
