    “An ordinary woman’s face and shape, uttered the voice now, of a mocking demon”.
  • Jane is ordered to not speak to Mr Mason and therefore is left with only her own thoughts
    “no conversation”
    Jane is kept in the dark about Rochester’s secret.

Lots of gore, blood, flesh, pain etc.
- Themes of the supernatural and spiritual allows Bronte to create drama and suspense and mystery: “why has he…why does he…who is he…”.
- Exploring Jane’s inner fears?
“mocking demon”

“Satan himself”
“lifeless fear”.

Context:

A
  • Reversal of gender roles / expectations.
  • Mason and Bertha are from Spanish town Jamaica - suspicious / wrong as not British.
  • Far off exotic places often used in Gothic literature so explain deviant / immoral behaviour.
  • Allows Bronte to explore this “deviance” that did exist in British society but in a “safe” way which her readership would accept.
