- Internal thoughts, Jane reflecting on her experience and tries to piece together what’s happening.
“An ordinary woman’s face and shape, uttered the voice now, of a mocking demon”. - Jane is ordered to not speak to Mr Mason and therefore is left with only her own thoughts

- Fear of judgement on Mr Rochester’s side as he’s resisting telling Jane about his secret and perhaps afraid of what she would think and that she’ll no longer love him.

Lots of gore, blood, flesh, pain etc.
- Themes of the supernatural and spiritual allows Bronte to create drama and suspense and mystery: “why has he…why does he…who is he…”.
- Exploring Jane’s inner fears?

- Reversal of gender roles / expectations.
- Mason and Bertha are from Spanish town Jamaica - suspicious / wrong as not British.
- Far off exotic places often used in Gothic literature so explain deviant / immoral behaviour.
- Allows Bronte to explore this “deviance” that did exist in British society but in a “safe” way which her readership would accept.
