Dysfunction
Degree to which behavior interferes with daily life and relationships
Distress
Degree to which behavior or emotions cause an individual to feel upset or uncomfortable
Typicality
Degree to which behavior is atypical, meaning rarely seen or statistically abnormal
Deviance
Degree to which behavior is considered outside the standards or rules of society
Panic disorder
a psychological disorder that includes recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and fear that can cause significant changes
in behavior
Specific phobia
a psychological disorder characterized by a distinct fear or anxiety related to an object or situation
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A psychological disorder characterized by an excessive amount of worry and
anxiety about activities relating to family, health, school, and other aspects of
daily life
* Psychological distress is accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle
tension and restlessness.
* Influenced by both nature and nurture
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
obsessions are repeated, intrusive thoughts; compulsions are repeated intrusive behaviors
Major Depressive Disorder
A major depressive episode is evident if five or
more symptoms:
* occur for at least 2 consecutive weeks and represent
a change from prior functioning,
* cause significant distress or impairment, and
* are not due to a medical or drug-related condition
Bipolar Disorders
Episodes of mania that include an
“abnormally, persistently elevated,
expansive, or irritable mood and
persistently increased activity or
energy that is present for most of the
day, nearly every day, for a period of
at least 1 week” (p. 127). This may be
preceded by hypomania or
depression.
schizophrenia
Loss of contact with reality that is severe and
chronic
* Hallmark features are disturbances in thinking,
perception, and language.
* Psychotic symptoms include delusions and
hallucinations.
- positive is symptoms that show and negative is symptoms that are hard to find
Personality disorder
An enduring, inflexible pattern of inner experience
and behavior that deviates from the expectations of an individual’s culture.
Borderline
Incomplete sense of self, extreme self-criticism, unstable emotions, and feelings of emptiness
Antisocial
Unethical behavior, deceitfulness, impulsivity, irritability, aggressiveness, disregard for others, and
lack of remorse
Dissociative Identity Disorder and Schizophrenia
Are not the same
