SPEECH

A pattern of movements of the speech organs AND a pattern of acoustic vibrations.

DIALECTS

They are the same language but have differences in pronunciations, vocabulary or grammar.

IDIOLECT

Is determined by our speech community, regional background, social class, and individual factors and experiences. It is what distinguishes us as individuals.

MORPHEME

The minimal unit of meaning. The smallest unit of language that carries semantic interpretation.

  • Can be stems, endings for plurals and verb tenses, suffixes and prefixes.
  • Each word has 1 morpheme.
  • Morphemes do not have to be words, they can be "ing", "ed", and the plural s.
