Chapter 2 Pt 2 Flashcards
(12 cards)
When will the chemical equilibrium change?
It will shift if more reactants or products are added; or by changing the temperature with endothermic or exothermic reactions.
What are chemical equilibrium’s?
When forward and reverse actions are equal.
What are the two forms of energy?
Potential energy- Stored energy Kinetic Energy- Energy of motion
What are some forms of kinetic energy & explain them.
Thermal energy- Kinetic energy of molecules in motion. Temperature- measure of how much thermal energy a substance possesses. Heat- transfer of thermal energy between substances of different temperatures.
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only transferred and transformed.
What is spontaneous reaction?
When it happens on it’s own; no continuous input of energy required.
Spontaneous reactions occur when what happens?
- Products have lower potential energy than reactants; energy is released. 2. Products are less ordered than reactants; entropy increases.
What is the Second Law of Thermodynamics?
Entropy always increases in an isolated system.
What does entropy mean?
A measure of the amount of disorder of any system, such as a group of molecules.
What is so important about carbon?
- It’s common on earth. 2. It forms four covalent bonds. 3. Organic compounds are extremely diverse.
