Chapter 6 Pt 1 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are lipids?
Water-insoluble biomolecules; they are (mostly) nonpolar and hydrophobic.
What are fats (tryglycerides) made of?
3 Fatty Acids & 1 Glycerol.
Are fats polymers?
No, but they store energy efficiently.
What bond is used to make a fat?
Ester Linkages
What are the three main types of lipids in cells?
Fats, Steroids, and Phospholipids
How are steroids made?
4 carbon rings, a tail, and an R-group
What are phospholipids made of?
Glycerol, 2 tails, and polar head
What does selective permeability mean?
Some substances cross more easily than others.
What is the difference between permeable and impermeable?
Permeable: too small, uncharged, and hydrophobic molecules
Impermeable: Large polar molecules and ions
Fat properties depend on what?
Whether or not the fatty acids are saturated or unsaturated.
What is the difference between the hydrocarbon chains in saturated and unsaturated fats?
Saturated Fats: hydrocarbon chains don’t have double-bonds.
Unsaturated Fats: hydrocarbons have double-bonds
What happens to the membrane permeability if they have unsaturated fatty acids?
Higher permeability, higher fluid
What happens to the membrane permeability if they don’t have unsaturated fatty acids?
Lower permeability, less fluid
What does an ester linkage do?
Binds fatty acids and glycerol
