What is dissociation?
Is a mental process that causes a lack of connection between a person’s conscious awareness and some aspect of him/herself (e.g., memory, sense of identity, self-perception, experience of reality)
What are 3 main dissociative disorders:
- Depersonalization/derealization disorder
- Dissociative identity disorder/multiple personality disorder
- Dissociative amnesia disorder
What is depersonalization/derealization disorder?
Persistent depersonalization: feeling detached from one’s body or mental processes
Persistent derealization: feeling of unreality or detachment from one’s surrounding
What is the gender prevalence?
Equally prevalent in men and women
What are 2 cognitive symptoms?
Fragmentation of identity, memory gaps
What is dissociative amnesia disorder?
Extensive memory loss; not attributable to illness, disease or substance use
What is dissociative identity disorder
- 2 or more distinct personality states and reccurent gaps in recall of everyday events, personal info and/or traumatic events
What is the treatment of dissociative disorders?
