Chapter 26 Fire Prevention Flashcards
(16 cards)
The decision to issue a Fire Ban is based on a consideration of six code components that make up the Fire Weather Index System what are they?
Fine Fuel Moisture Code
Duff Moisture Code
Drought Code
Initial Spread Index
Build Up Index
Fire Weather Index
Some examples of common fire hazards are
Heating and cooking equipment
Smoking and matches
Housekeeping (environmental control)
Electrical power and equipment
Fumigation and insecticides
Air conditioning and ventilating systems
Cleaning agents, compounds, and equipment
Storage incompatibility
What is a personal hazard in relation to fire prevention
The term “personal hazard” covers all of the traits, habits, and personalities of the people who supervise, work in, live in, or visit the property or building in question.
Some materials and processes that constitute special hazard occupancy include
Painting
Welding
Chemicals
Acids
Flammable liquids
Explosives
Gas
Dust
Some examples of target hazards are
Lumber yards
Public assembly buildings
Area shopping centers
Row Housing
Flammable liquid bulk storage
Fur storage
Hospitals
Schools
What is a Special fire hazard as it relates to fire prevention
Special fire hazards arise from the processes or operations that take place in a particular occupancy.
What are target hazards as they relate to fire prevention
A target hazard is a condition, facility, or process that could produce or stimulate a fire involving a possible large life loss, a large fire loss, a large concentration of material that would burn rapidly, or a concentration of materials of high monetary value.
What is an exposure hazard as it relates to fire prevention
An exposure hazard is property that, when burning, may endanger nearby property or structures by fire that may extend from the exposed hazard.
Factors that will affect minimum distance and protection criteria in relation to an exposure hazard property are
Construction (both the number of storeys and the combustibility of the material involved)
Occupancy
Area (square meters or feet of space per floor)
Occupancies are classified as
light, ordinary, or extra hazard based on the concentration of combustible storage, the process involved, and the number of occupants.
What is Conflagration
From a fire protection standpoint, the term conflagration applies to sweeping fires that spread beyond control over a large area, crossing natural or prepared barriers and destroying many buildings.
Very run-down structures, and those in which especially dangerous enterprises are carried on, are called
conflagration breeders
List some of the Inspection objectives
- To learn about the occupancy and the conditions in which it is operating.
- To observe and compare what is found during the inspection with the applicable Regulations and Codes.
- To record the findings of the inspection, the corrections needed, and the action taken to achieve reasonable compliance with Fire Regulations and Codes.
- To ensure that the minimum fire safety requirements are put into effect, and if not, to use the inspection record as a basis for legal action.
What is the purpose of public education?
- To establish behaviour and attitudes in people that will impact positively on fire situations. Fire safety education stresses the learning of specific behaviours that will help prevent fires from starting and will enable correct responses in fire emergencies.
What steps should be taken in developing and implementing a fire safety education program?
- Identify the most important local fire problems. This includes the identification of fire hazards, high risk locations, high risk times, high risk victims and high risk behaviour.
- Select target audiences and program objectives for each target audience.
- Determine the content and format of each program.
- The implementation of each program which includes the production of materials required for these programs.
- Evaluation of each program to determine what impact it has on fire safety.
List some of the agencies that the fire prevention branch may interact with.
- Various government departments Municipal, provincial, and Federal /
- Private consulting firms
- Private industry, which can supply technical data regarding the products they manufacture and sell.
- Organizations that have testing facilities.
- Private interests such as insurance organizations.
