Chapter 4- Divisions Of The Nervous System Flashcards
(7 cards)
What does the afferent division of the NS do? (3)
Carry information into the CNS.
Info is carried by somatic sensory neurons from the skin and muscles and visceral sensory neurons from internal organs.
What does the Efferent division of the NS do?(6)
Carries information away from the CNS
Efferent division is split into:
somatic division- carries messages to the skeletal muscles
Autonomic division- carries messages to the heart and involuntary muscles and glands. The autonomic division is split into the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
What does the autonomic nervous system do? (2)
Responsible for the control of the body’s internal environment and is involved in many of the mechanisms that keep the internal environment constant. Regulates heart rate, body temp and digestion
What are 2 differences between the autonomic NS and the Somatic division of the PNS?
CONTROL- A Division: usually involuntary S Division: usually voluntary NERVES TO TARGT ORGAN- A Division: 2 sets- sympathetic, parasympathetic S Division: one set
Name 2 effects the ANS has- sympathetic and parasympathetic
HEART-
Symp: increases rate and strength of contraction
Para: decreases rate and strength of contraction
LUNGS-
Symp: dilates bronchioles
Para: constricts bronchioles
What does activation of the Sympathetic division do to the body?
Triggers the fight or flight response. Responses include:
- rate and force of contraction of heart increases
- depth of breathing increases
- adrenaline and noradrenaline are released
What are 2 differences between the nervous system and the Endocrine system?
TIME TAKEN TO RESPOND- NS: rapid- within milliseconds ES: Slower- from seconds to days. TRANSPORT OF MESSAGE- NS: along membrane of neurons ES: by bloodstream
