Chapter 5- The Central Nervous System Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
How is the CNS protected? (3)
A
- bone
- meninges
- Cerebrospinal fluid
2
Q
Label a brain diagrams (8)
A
- corpus callosum
- cerebrum
- cerebellum
- medulla Oblongata
- hypothalamus
- longitudinal fissure
- convolutions
- sulci
3
Q
What are the 4 lobes of the brain and label a diagram of lobes on brain
A
- frontal
- parietal
- occipital
- temporal
4
Q
What is the structure of the cerebrum? (3)
A
- outer surface of grey matter- cerebral cortex
- below grey is white matter
- deep inside cerebrum is more great matter- basal ganglia
5
Q
What are the functions of the cerebral cortex? (3)
A
- sensory areas: interpret impulses from receptors
- motor areas: control muscular movements
- association areas: intellectual and emotional processes
6
Q
What does the corpus callosum do
A
Allows the 2 sides of the cerebrum to communicate with each other
7
Q
What does the cerebellum control? (4)
A
- posture
- balance
- fine coordination of voluntary muscle movements
To do this cerebellum receives sensory info from inner ear (posture + balance) and from stretch receptors in skeletal muscle.
8
Q
3 functions of the hypothalamus
A
- heart rate
- body temp
- water balance
9
Q
What is the medulla Oblongata and what does it control (4)
A
- continuation of spinal cord
Contains: - cardiac centre: regulates rate and force of heartbeat
- respiratory centre: rate and depth of breathing
- vasomotor centre: diameter of blood vessels
10
Q
What does the spinal cord do
A
- carry sensory impulses up to the brain and motor impulses down from brain. Does this by ascending and descending tracts of spinal cord.
- integrate certain reflexes
