Chapter 4 Terms Flashcards
(33 cards)
Functions of cardiovascular system
Circulates blood, delivers nutrients to cells, removes waste products
Path of blood flow
RA > RV > pulmonary arteries > lungs > pulmonary veins > LA > LV > aorta > arteries/arterioles > capillaries > venules/veins > vena cava
Review heart and vessel anatomy
Do it
Diagnostic procedures for heart rate
Stethoscope, pulsations of arteries
Measuring blood pressure
Sphygmomanometer
Diagnostic tests for cardiovascular disorders and disease
Lab tests for fat and cardiac enzyme content, chest x-ray, treadmill exercise test
Arrhythmias/dysrythmias
Tachycardia, bradycardia, ventricular and atrial fibrillations
Ischemia
Reduced blood flow to heart
Myocardial infarction
Heart attack
Congestive heart failure
Heart weakens over time
Atherosclerosis
Plaque in arteries
Thrombosis
Blood clots
Stroke
Disrupted blood flow to brain
Thrombotic stroke
Blood clot blocks blood flow to brain
Embolic stroke
Fatty plaque or blood clot breaks away and flows to brain where it blocks and artery
Cerebral hemorrhage
Ruptured blood vessel (aneurism) causes leaking blood in brain
Aneurism
Widening of artery or vein that may burst
Surgical and therapeutic interventions for cardiovascular pathologies
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardiac pacemakers, balloon angioplasty (improves blood flow by flattening plaque with balloon catheter), intracoronary stents (supports inside of vessels and keeps them open)
Beta blockers
Lower heart rate by blocking beta adrenergic receptors (prevents epinephrine and norepinephrine from binding), drugs ending in olol
Statins
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, lower cholesterol, end in -statin
Nitrates (nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate)
Induce vasodilation to increase blood flow
Lymphatic system functions
Maintain internal fluid environment by circulating proteins and tissue fluids to blood, helps with absorption of fats into bloodstream, helps defend body against microorganisms and disease
Components of lymphatic system
Lymph (fluid), lymph nodes with lymphocytes, spleen, thymus, tonsils
Spleen
Immune cell production and destruction, blood storage
