Chapter 4C: Observational Learning (pptx) Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is observational learning?
A type of learning that occurs through watching the actions of a model and the consequences that their actions receive
Observational learning is also known as social learning, vicarious conditioning, or modelling.
What is a model in the context of observational learning?
The individual who is performing the behaviour that is being watched/observed
List the five stages of observational learning.
- Attention
- Retention
- Reproduction
- Motivation
- Reinforcement
What is the first stage of observational learning?
Attention
What is required in the attention stage of observational learning?
Learners must actively focus on the model in order to learn
What is the second stage of observational learning?
Retention
What must learners do in the retention stage of observational learning?
Create a mental representation and remember (retain) the behaviour the model has demonstrated
What is the third stage of observational learning?
Reproduction
What does the reproduction stage involve?
The learner must have the physical and mental capabilities to reproduce the observed behaviour
What is the fourth stage of observational learning?
Motivation
What is necessary during the motivation stage for learning to occur?
The learner must want to reproduce the behaviour
What is the fifth stage of observational learning?
Reinforcement
How does reinforcement affect observational learning?
If the learner receives a desirable consequence for their behaviour, they are more likely to reproduce the behaviour again in the future
True or False: Reinforcement can only occur before the behaviour in observational learning.
False
Fill in the blank: The acronym for the five stages of observational learning is _______.
ARRRM
What is the significance of reinforcement in the stages of observational learning?
It is the only stage that can occur after the behaviour is done by that person
