(21 cards)
What energy source does the prefix photo- indicate?
light
What energy source does the prefix chemo- indicate?
inorganic or organic molecules
What carbon source does the suffix -autotroph indicate?
carbon dioxide
What carbon source does the suffix -heterotroph indicate?
organic molecules
A bacterium that ONLY possesses the ability to ferment obtains energy from what process only?
glycolysis
Increasing the temperature of a reaction causes…
increase in reaction rate, increase in the number of molecules attaining activation energy, increase in the number of molecular collisions, and increase in kinetic energy of the molecules
In green and purple bacteria, electrons to reduce carbon dioxide can come from
hydrogen sulfide
What are heterolactic fermenters?
produce lactic acid and other acids and alcohols
What are homolactic fermenters?
lactic acid is the only side product
Why would yeast grow without producing alcohol?
Oxygen is available
What is the energy source of photoautotrophs?
light
What is the carbon source of photoautotrophs?
carbon dioxide
What is the energy source of chemoautotrophs?
organic or inorganic compounds
What is the carbon source of chemoautotrophs?
carbon dioxide
What is the energy source of photoheterotrophs?
light
What is the carbon source of photoheterotrophs?
organic compounds
What is the energy source of chemoheterotrophs?
organic or inorganic compounds
What is the carbon source of chemoheterotrophs?
organic compounds
Describe the biochemical test for resource utilization
the decarboxylase test measures the ability of microbes to use either protein or carbohydrate food resources. this is detected by the production of acidic and/or alkaline byproducts which is measured by a pH indicator
Describe the fermentation test
distinguishes microbe species by the form of fermentation indicated by waste products. this is found by use of a pH indicator and an inverted tube to detect acids, gases, or both
