Chemical Bonding Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is ionic bonding?
metal + non-metal (except for H & NH4)
Strong electrostatic attraction
What does ionic bonding do with its electrons?
gives/takes
What does ionic bonding produce?
giant structures
What are the characteristics of giant structures?
-don’t conduct electricity
-brittle
-ions aren’t free to move
-melting/boiling points are high (need strong forces to break bonds)
What does metallic bonding produce?
alloys
What is an alloy?
mix of metal and 1 or more elements
Why are alloys strong?
atoms are different sizes so slippage of layers is restricted
What is metallic bonding?
giant lattice of positive ions held together by sea of delocalised electrons
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive ions & electrons
What happens if the charge is higher in metallic bonding?
giant lattice of positive ions held together by sea of delocalised electrons
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive ions & electrons
What is covalent bonding?
Non metal + non metal
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive nuclei of atom & shared pair of electrons
What is a diatomic molecule?
2 of the same atom bonded together (e.g. Cl2, H2)
