Energetics Flashcards
(6 cards)
How do you know a reaction is exothermic?
Energy is released to surroundings
- measure temp. rise
- deltaH is negative
- more energy is released when bonds are made in the products than what is absorbed to break them in the reactants
How do to know a reaction is endothermic?
Energy is absorbed from surroundings
- measure temp. decrease
- deltaH is positive
- more energy is absorbed breaking bonds in the reactants than is released when bonds are made in products
What is the equation for enthalpy change?
Q = m x c x deltaT
What is bond breaking?
An endothermic process - needs energy
What is bond making?
An exothermic process - releases energy
What is bond energies?
energy required to break 1 mole of covalent bond
