What is an element?
A pure substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is a compound?
Two or more different atoms chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
Two or more different elements or compounds put together but not chemically bonded.
What is an atom?
Tiny particles that make up everything, smallest part of an element.
What are molecules?
Smallest particle that can have separate, individual existence.
Give examples of a molecule.
O2, N2, H2O
What is OH?
Hydroxide
What is NH4?
Ammonium
What is CO?
Carbon monoxide
What is the chemical test for water?
- white, anhydrous copper (2) sulphate
- add water
- turns blue
What is the chemical test for hydrogen?
- burning splint
- the gas will explode
- squeaky pop
What is the chemical test for oxygen?
- glowing splint
- gas causes splint to relight
What is the chemical test for chlorine?
- chlorine gas will turn moist litmus paper from blue to red
- will then bleach it white
What is the chemical test for ammonia?
- ammonia will turn wet litmus paper from red to blue
What is the chemical test for carbon dioxide?
- bubble the gas through limewater
- the limewater will then go milky-white
What is the formula for ammonia?
NH3
What is the formula for methane?
CH4
What are groups in the periodic table?
Vertical columns on the periodic table.
What are periods in the periodic table?
Horizontal rows on the periodic table.
What is the name of Group 1?
Alkali metals
What are Group 7 metals called?
Halogens
What are Group 0 metals called?
The noble gases

Boils as 100°C
What are metals?
Conduct electricity; majority of periodic table
