Metals Flashcards
(9 cards)
Why do metals have high melting & boiling points?
giant structure
many strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive metal ions & sea of delocalised electrons that require a lot of energy to overcome
Why are metals good conductors of electricity?
sea of delocalised electrons can move, so a current can travel through the metal
Why are metals malleable?
easy to shape
layers of ordered positive ions slide over each other easily
Why are metals ductile?
can be pulled into wires
layers of ordered positive ions slide over each other easily
alloy
mixture of elements where at least 1 is metal
Why are alloys so strong?
different sized atoms are added to structure
distorts layers in metal
layers can’t slide over each other as easily
What properties does high carbon have?
very strong but very brittle
What properties does low carbon have?
softer & easier to shape
What properties does stainless steel have?
hard & resistant to corrosion
