food tech - provinence Flashcards
(3 cards)
What is the definition of food provenance?
It refers to the origins of a food product, including where it was grown, raised, or caught, and how it was produced and transported
Why is food provenance important? Give 4 reasons
1: Knowing where your food comes from can help you trace potential threats, such as outbreaks of disease, which could contaminate your food.
2: You can see the environmental impact which your food has on the world by looking at its provenance
3: If you want to support a local or foreign producer of food, then knowing the provenance can help you with that
4: Knowing the provenance of your food can ensure its quality. If you are buying British pineapples, you know they will be of lower quality than those produced in a tropical country
For mum or dad: examples aren’t necessary, so long as I got the definition correct, it will be a 5
What are food miles?
The distance a food travels to make it to your plate
