Causes

A

Viral infection - varicella zoster virus

Transmission - droplet and direct contact. After primary infection: Dorman in the dorsal root nerve ganglia

Epidemiology

A

Childhood infection
Can affect all ages eg. Reactivation of virus if adult never contracted chickenpox before

Signs and symptoms

A

Incubation period - 21 days
Flulike symptoms 1-2 rash will later appear

Rash: cluster of small red spots develop into itchy fluid filled blisters. Crust over after 1-2 days

Treatment

A

Self limiting - paracetamol: 3months +
Virasoothe - 6 months +
Calamine, chlorphenamine (1 year +)
