STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT
Key Principles of Human Growth and Development:
Cephalocaudal: Growth and development proceed from the head downward, meaning infants gain control of their head before their lower body: By 6 to 12months of age, infants starts to gain leg control and may be able to crawl, stand, or walk.
Proximodistal: Development moves from the center of the body outward.
Continuity: Development is a continuous process, with new skills building upon previously acquired ones.
Sequentiality: Development follows a specific sequence, with one stage leading to the next.
PRENATAL PERIOD
(conception to birth)
*Growth from single cell to an organism with brain and capabilities
INFANCY
(Birth - 18 - 24 months/
4 weeks to 2 years)
Extreme dependence on adults
Psychological activities just to begin: Language, Symbolic thought, sensorimotor coordination capabilities.
Early Childhood
(end of infancy to 5 - 6 years old (Grade 1)
Preschool years
Young children learn become more self-sufficient and care for themselves
Develop school readiness skills and play with peers
6 - 11 year of Age
Elementary School Years
Fundamental skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic are mastered
