What does the term “nation” refer to?
A shared sense of belonging and state of mind, including beliefs
What are some key concepts of a nation?
- The nation is the people
- Emerges from a feeling of belonging
- An imagined political community
- Exists when people want self-government
- Expresses the soul of the people
What is a nation-state?
A country with physical borders, has its sovereignty.
What is the difference between nationalism and patriotism?
Nationalism is the pride and loyalty to a nation; patriotism is how that pride and loyalty are demonstrated.
What is a linguistic nation?
A group where shared language helps create a distinct mindset;
e.g. the Quebecois (French-speaking people in Quebec).
What is an ethnic nation?
A nation based on shared ethnicity and heritage
What is a cultural nation?
A nation formed by shared ways of life or traditions which may or may not overlap with ethnicity.
What is a religious nation?
A nation where a shared religion forms the basis of national identity; e.g. Israel and Iran.
What is a geographic nation?
A nation that forms identity based on common geographical features; e.g. Tibet (mountainous)
What is a nation with a relationship to the land?
A nation with a spiritual or traditional connection to land
What is a spiritual nation?
A nation where landmarks or land itself hold spiritual meaning; e.g. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump for the Blackfoot.
What is a political nation?
A nation formed by a desire for self-determination and independence; e.g. Tibet and Kosovo.
What is a civic nation?
A nation united by shared laws and values, not by common language or culture
What are elements of a civic nation?
- Agreement to shared laws
- Mutual respect enabling peaceful coexistence
- Multiculturalism and equality regardless of differences
What are some common myths or stories about Canadians?
- Canada is a hockey nation
- Canadians are polite
- Canadians are accepting of cultural and religious differences
- Canadians are funny
