What does MAIN stand for in the causes of WWI?
Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism
What is militarism?
The belief in building up strong armed forces to prepare for war.
How did militarism contribute to WWI?
New technology and eagerness for war increased tensions; over 40 million people were killed or wounded.
What are alliances?
Agreements among nations to defend one another if attacked.
What were the two major alliances before WWI?
The Triple Entente (Britain, France, Russia) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy)
What is imperialism?
When stronger nations control weaker ones to expand empires and access resources.
How did imperialism cause WWI?
Competition over colonies increased tension between European powers.
What is nationalism?
Pride and loyalty to one’s nation; often led to aggressive competition and desire for independence.
How did nationalism lead to WWI?
It united some countries and divided empires with minority groups wanting independence.
What event triggered WWI?
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on July 28, 1914.
Why was WWI unlike anything before?
It involved total war, new deadly weapons, and massive civilian casualties.
What are examples of WWI inventions still used today?
Wristwatches, blood banks, zippers, stainless steel, penicillin, tanks, and airplanes.
What happened to European empires after WWI?
Empires like Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire collapsed.
What new countries were created after WWI?
Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia.
How was Germany punished after WWI?
Through the Treaty of Versailles which blamed them for the war and imposed harsh penalties.
What was the Paris Peace Conference?
A 1919 meeting of Allied nations to set peace terms for Central Powers.
Who were the ‘Big Three’ at the Paris Peace Conference?
France, Britain, and the United States.
What did France want at the Peace Conference?
Revenge on Germany and financial reparations.
What did Britain want at the Peace Conference?
Peace and to rebuild Germany.
What did the United States want at the Peace Conference?
Long-lasting peace through diplomacy and Wilson’s 14 Points.
What were Wilson’s 14 Points?
US President Woodrow Wilson’s plan for postwar peace, including self-determination and the League of Nations.
What was the League of Nations?
An international organization formed to prevent future wars and maintain peace.
Why did the League of Nations fail?
The US didn’t join, Germany was banned, and it lacked a military force.
What was the Treaty of Versailles?
A 1919 treaty that formally ended WWI and imposed penalties on Germany.
