circulatory system Flashcards
(36 cards)
what side of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood?
right
what side of the heart deals with oxygenated blood
left
what circulation is the left side called?
systemic circulation
what circulation is the right side called
pulmonary circulation
what are the 4 main chambers of the heart?
left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium and right ventricle
where does the the blood pump to on the left side of the heart?
pumps blood around the rest of the body
where does the blood pump to on the right side of the body?
pumps blood to the lungs
what do the valves do?
keeps blood moving in one direction
opens and closed when blood moves through. the valves close when the heart relaxes
what does the superia vena cava do?
a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body (head, shoulders, neck and arms) back into the heart
what does the pulmonary artery do?
carries deoxygenated blood from the heart back to the lungs
what does the aorta do?
carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of then bodies (organs)
what does the pulmonary vein do?
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
what are the atria (atriums left and right)
receiving station of blood. the right atrium receives deoxygenated blood and the left atrium receives oxygenated blood.
what does the inferior vena cava do?
carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body back to the heart
what does the atrioventricular valve does? (tricuspid valve and mitral valves)
ensures the blood flows in the right direction, from the atria to the ventricles preventing back flow during systole.
what does the chordae tendinaea do?
often called the “heart strings” are tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the atrioventricular valves preventing the valves from prolapsing into the atria during systole
what does the papillary muscle do?
small coned shaped muscles within the hearts ventricles preventing back flow of blood during venticular contraction by tensing the chordae tendinaea
what does the apex do?
hearts pointed tip located at the end of heart, it helps to wring out blood from the ventricles to the rest of the body
what does the septum do?
prevents mixing oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood
which side of the heart is thicker and why?
left because is requires a lot more muscle to pump blood to the rest of the body
what do capillaries do?
delivers nutrients and oxygen to cells throughout your body and removed waste from your cells
what type of blood do capillaries carry?
both oxygenated and deoxygenated
what is the structure of a capillary?
microscopic blood vessels one cell thick.
what do arteries do?
- carries oxygenated blood away from the heart (excluding pulmonary artery)
- vasocontricts/ dilates to control body temperature
