enzymes and metabolism Flashcards
(16 cards)
name the 7 factors affecting an enzyme.
- concentration of an enzyme
- concentration of a substrate
- removal of products
- temperature
- PH
- co-factors
- enzyme inhibators
explain how the concentration of a substate affects an enzyme?
higher substrate concentration increases the rate of reaction
explain how the concentration of an enzyme affects an enzyme?
higher concentration= faster chemical reaction
explain how removal of products affect an enzyme?
the product of reaction must be continually removed or rate of reaction will be slowed
explain how PH affects an enzyme?
enzymes are sensitive to PH each enzyme has optimum PH at which it will work most effectively
explain how temperature affects an enzyme?
rate of chemical reaction increases as temperature increases (only true 30-40 degrees)
explain how co-factors affect an enzyme?
change the shape of the substrate (active site) so enzyme can combine with substrate
explain how enzyme inhibitors affect an enzyme?
slows or stops enzyme activity
what is an enzyme?
an enzyme is a protein that allows and accelerates chemical reactions
explain how an enzyme and a substrate combine?
each enzyme will only combine with a particular substrate
what is the active site?
the part of the enzyme molecule that binds with the substrate.
how is the enzyme-substrate complex created?
when the enzyme and substrate have characteristics complimentary to each other and temporarily combine
when the enzyme and substrate react what do they produce?
a product
are the products able to combine with other enzymes?
yes
example of the method used between enzymes and substrates?
lock and key
how do enzymes react with activation energy?
the enzymes reduces the energy needed to get activation started
