circulatory system Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the main function of the circulatory system?
To transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste throughout the body.
What are the main components of the circulatory system?
Heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and blood.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four—two atria (top) and two ventricles (bottom).
trace the path of blood through the heart.
Body → Right atrium → Right ventricle → Lungs → Left atrium → Left ventricle → Body
What separates the heart’s left and right sides?
The septum.
What is the function of heart valves?
Prevent backflow of blood.
Name the four heart valves.
Tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral (bicuspid), aortic.
What are the two main circulatory loops?
Pulmonary (heart ↔ lungs) and systemic (heart ↔ body).
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated).
What do veins do?
Carry blood toward the heart (usually deoxygenated).
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels where gas and nutrient exchange occurs.
