eye Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the function of the eye?
To detect light and convert it into electrical signals for the brain.
What is the correct order of light passage through the eye?
Cornea → Aqueous humor → Pupil → Lens → Vitreous humor → Retina
What is the cornea?
The transparent front layer of the eye that bends (refracts) light.
What is the aqueous humor?
Clear fluid between the cornea and lens; helps maintain pressure and nourishes tissues.
What is the pupil?
The opening in the iris that controls how much light enters the eye.
What is the iris?
The colored part of the eye that adjusts the pupil size to regulate light entry.
What is the lens?
A flexible, transparent structure that focuses light onto the retina.
What is the vitreous humor?
Gel-like substance that fills the eye and maintains its shape.
What is the retina?
The inner layer at the back of the eye that contains photoreceptors.
What are photoreceptors?
Cells in the retina that detect light—rods for dim light, cones for color.
What is the optic nerve?
The nerve that transmits visual signals from the retina to the brain.
What is the fovea?
A small area on the retina with a high concentration of cones for sharp vision.
What happens at the blind spot?
No photoreceptors are present where the optic nerve exits the eye.
