Rosa Parks
A black woman arrested in 1955 after refusing to give her seat to a white man.
How did the population of the USA change after WW2?
Refugees and immigrants flooded into the States. But, the south stayed segregated and Black people lacked rights still.
What did the Supreme Court say on segregation?
Supreme Court’s Ruling
In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled segregation in schools was unconstitutional. In 1956, they ruled against segregation again on buses after Rosa Parks’ arrest.
Montgomery Bus Boycott
A boycott arranged by Civil Rights activists after the arrest of Rosa Parks.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Leader of the Civil Rights movement. Pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, affiliated with the SCLC. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott; organized and spoke at the March on Washington; inspired and united activists. King was attacked and eventually assasinated on April 4th, 1968 for his work.
The Civil Rights Act
President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, banning discrimination based on race, sex, religion, or origin in public places.
The Voting Rights Act
Implimented in 1965, the Voting Rights Act protected rights for ALL citizens to vote.
