The Articles of Confederation
A document written during the Revolution helping leaders agree on how to lead. The only constitution the US had early on.
Federalist
A group that believed the USA needed a strong, central government.
Anti-Federalists
A group opposed to both a new constitution and larger government.
Constitutional Convention
A convention aiming to address the weak government staring May 1787. Delegates from the states debated and reached compromise. Together, 55 Americans wrote the Constitution. All thirteen states approved the document by May 1790.
The Constitution
The law of laws. The constitution gave congress power like borrowing, providing welfare, printing money, and proposing laws. It also divided the government into its three branches.
Legislative
The branch of government that makes laws.
Executive
The branch of government that keeps the country lawful.
The President
The overseerer of the country, making sure laws are carried out. The president is commander-in-chief of the military. In charge of the nations alignments.
Judicial
The branch of government containing courts, like the Supreme Court. Settles any law related disputes.
The Supreme Court
A court, made of nine appointed jduges, that settle federal cases. They process laws and decide if they’re constitutional: unconstitutional laws are repealed.
Bill of Rights
Anti-Federalists wanted more security from government overreach. James Madison wrote the Bill of rights, an add on to the Constitution. It makes up the first ten amendments.
