When did the Great Depression happen?
1929 until the late 1930s.
The Holocaust
The Holocaust was the systematic murder of six million European Jews and six million other persecuted persons from 1933 to 1945 by Nazi Germany and allies.
How did Hitler rise to power?
Economic and political crisises led to more vunerable governments; democracy in Germany was already weak. He became chancellor in 1933.
When/why did the USA enter WW2?
On December 7, 1941 Japan, aligned with the Centeral Powers, bombed a naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii killing 2,400 people. America declared war on Japan on December 8th.
What was the goal of Pearl Harbor?
Japan wanted to weaken the USA’s navy; they planned to forcibly take oil supplies; they chose a less intense attack hoping the US would respond by negotiating peace.
What was the first act of WW2?
Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939.
The Phony War
After Germany’s invasion of Poland, Britain, and France declared war against Germany but took no action. From September 1939 to May 1940.
Axis Powers
Germany, Italy, and Japan.
The Allies
Britain, the Soviet Union, France, and the United States.
The ‘Final Solution’
Last stage of the holocaust, 1941 to 1945; when the majority of Jewish victims were killed. SS and police units began massive killing operations: introducing shooting operations, mobile gas vans, and eventually killing centers. The “Final Solution” called for the murder of all European Jews.
Operation Overlord
Battle of Normandy (D-Day)
Launched June 6, 1944, the Allies successful liberation of Western Europe. The Allies invaded Normandy France by air and sea after using military deception.
Battle of Berlin
Staring April 1945, three Soviet fronts attacked Berlin and the Red Army gradually took the city. Hitler commited on April 30th and in May, German’s surrendered.
Hiroshima
August 1945, the USA dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Japan surrendered.

Winston Churchill
Elected British prime ministor in 1940. Rallied British people and led them to victory against the Central Powers.
