classic study: Baddeley 1966b Flashcards
(32 cards)
What was the aim of Baddeley’s study?
To investigate whether long term memory encodes semantically or acoustically
What was the sample?
75 young servicemen
What did the participants go through before the procedure?
a hearing test
How many pp’s were excluded before the procedure?
3
(72 pp’s left)
What kind of experiment was it?
Lab exp
What experimental design was used?
independent groups design
How many conditions were there?
4
What was the independent variable?
the type of similarity between words in a list
What was the dependent variable?
score on word 10 word recall test in correct order
How many words were there in each word list?
10 words
What was list A?
Acoustically similar words (sound similar)
What was list B?
Acoustically dissimilar words (sound different)
What was list C?
semantically similar words (similar meanings)
What was list D?
semantically dissimilar words (different meanings)
How many participants were in condition A?
18
How many participants were in condition B?
17
How many participants were in condition C+D?
20
What happened during the learning trials?
Pp’s presented aloud on tape 1 word for 3 secs with 40 secs to write down (in order) as many words they heard- this was carried out 4 times
How long was the interval task and what was it?
20 mins of recalling sequences of 8 digits
What happened after the interval task?
participants were unexpectedly asks to recall the words in the correct order without revision
What were the results of the semantically similar words?
recall was poor, indicating similar meanings interfered with memory
What were the results of acoustically similar words?
no significant impact on recall suggesting that LTM does not rely on sound
What was the conclusion about the procedure?
it was not a true test of LTM which was being influenced by material stored in STM
What was the conclusion about LTM?
LTM primarily encoded semantically, as words with similar meaning caused semantic confusion
