working memory model Flashcards
(23 cards)
What does the WMM theorise about STM?
STM is one store with different components in it
Who designed the WMM?
Baddeley + Hitch
How can two tasks be carried out according to the WMM in STM?
they’re being dealt with by different parts of the memory system
What is the central executive?
The control centre
What does the central executive do?
Decides which information is attended to and coordinates operation of the other slave systems
Does the central executive store information?
No
What is the capacity of the central executive
Limited capacity
What does the visuospatial sketchpad (VSS) do?
Stores visual and spatial information (mental imagery and navigation) and keeps track of where we are in relation to other objects
What is the capacity of the VSS?
3-4
What does the phonological loop (PL) consist of?
Phonological store and articulatory process
What does the PL do?
Processes and temporarily stores auditory and verbal information
What is the function of the phonological store?
stores sound-based information (“inner ear”)
What is the articulatory process?
rehearsal of info to keep it in the WM (“inner voice”)
What is the episodic buffer?
A late addition to the WMM which combines information from the Phonological loop and the visuospatial sketchpad with Long Term Memory to create a coherent episode (binds memories together)
What is the capacity of the episodic buffer?
Limited
What is the duration of the episodic buffer?
Temporary
What research from Baddeley + Hitch gives credibility to the WMM?
(C.o.d.a)
Dual task experiment- aimed to see if participants can use different parts of WM at the same time by performing 2 tasks at the same time (verbal digit span task & true/false questions).
They found the verbal reasoning (T/F) task used the CE and digit span task used PL
Which case study by Shallice + Warrington supports the WMM?
(C.o.d.a)
KF had a motorcycle accident resulting in brain damage to his occipital lobe. His STM was damaged but he could remember words which were presented visually rather than auditorily
How does Lieberman criticise WM?
(c.O.d.a)
he points out blind/visually impaired people have spatial awareness, questioning in the credibility of the VSS
What other opposition is there against the WMM?
(c.O.d.a)
It’s based on lab experiments which means the tasks were artificial and not true tests of memory
What is a different model of memory?
(c.o.D.a)
MSM- suggests info flows in a fixed straight line from sensory memory into STM into LTM
How can the WMM be applied to educational settings?
(c.o.d.A)
design strategies for improving students learning as it highlights how overloaded WM can impair learning leading to breaking down information into chunks or spreading out learning over time
What other 2 ways can the WMM be applied?
(c.o.d.A)
- KF case study
- Can explain why people struggle with multi- tasking
